The recent publication of the UN’s Climate Report has put into perspective the importance of living and working sustainably. Aptly labelled by the press as a ‘survival guide for humanity’, the report highlights the ‘rapidly closing window of opportunity’ to make valuable change.

For the team here at Anchor, our dedication to ensuring we operate sustainably across each division of the Group has seen the business take huge strides with regards to our carbon footprint.

This has been achieved through a number of initiatives, whether it be training or adopting new technologies and products, Anchor remains committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2025, not to mention supporting our clients to also achieve this goal.

Below we take a look at just some of the innovations that Anchor has adopted within our operations:

Eliminate carbon emissions from transport

Anchor will look to eliminate carbon emissions from its transport by transitioning its fleet of vehicles to electric models. We aim to have completed this transition well in advance of our net zero target (2025).

As we work towards this target, we are endeavouring to reduce our CO2 within our existing fleet by utilising fuel-efficient vehicles.

Eliminate non-sustainable waste

We will be eliminating non-sustainable waste from the business by applying the 4 Rs to each of our products and services – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover.

If you follow us on LinkedIn, you may have seen a number of new products that we have introduced in recent months to support this initiative, including ECO-tabs that are utilised in our cleaning services, which both limit packaging and reduce the amount of plastic waste we are producing. To put this into perspective, we are saving in excess of 2 tonnes of single use plastic per year.

Decarbonise systems

Anchor will shift to renewable energy sources for electricity and heat to decarbonise its existing systems, and we have already made great strides in this area, with our Head Office running on renewable energy supplies.

To achieve this, waste generated at our Head Office is collected as part of a Waste to Energy Recovery route. Waste collected is firstly sorted and any recyclable items removed; the remaining waste is then sent to refuse derivative fuel recovery where it is shredded, dried, baled and finally burned to produce electricity.

Engaging our suppliers and stakeholders

We consistently engage with our suppliers and stakeholders to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain.

For example, we have a portfolio of 18 net zero carbon buildings that we provide our cleaning services to; this includes two retail destinations that are the first of their kind to achieve net zero operation against the UK Green Building Council’s (UKGBC) framework.

Of course, the above are just some of many strategies that the Anchor Group has underway to achieve our 2025 target of net zero carbon emissions. If you would like to find out more about our environmental initiatives, contact our team today!
